Lastovo has robbed us of words. We are staying in a tiny village called Lucice and, as you can see, the picture speaks for itself.
There were roughly four hundred people on the ferry from Split and six of us left by the time we arrived at Ubli. What more could you ask for? Our hosts, Olga and Bruno, are totally gorgeous. They speak very little English and my Croatian is improving at a rate of knots. We spent a hilarious evening together sitting outside getting to know each other. Bruno makes his own white wine. It is the best I have tasted since we have been here. Last year, he made 2000 litres and he is very good at it.
Three hundred years ago, there were pirates in these waters. The fishermen used to store their boats and equipment in the stone houses you can see in the photo. They would then hightail it up the mountain, using a stone track through the dense forest, to Lastovo village which is nestled in a valley on the other side, completely hidden from the sea.
This morning, Geoff and I scrambled up the track and had coffee at the top, overlooking the village below. It is so picturesque, I can't tell you. There are no tourist shops and there seems to be a few Croatian holidaymakers.
We were able to stock up on fresh bread, salami, pickles and basics at the small supermarket. When we were in Trogir, Ira introduced us to this sheep's cheese from Hercegovina, called something like "Lavinski". Imagine our delight when we discovered it this morning!
Lastovo is a National Park, with numerous walking tracks to explore. There are also little taverns tucked away in the coves.
We have decided to stay here for the duration and make day trips to the mainland if needs be........
