It's hard to believe that we have been here four days, we have lost track of time. Everyday, we have our cardio vascular workout climbing up the steep track through the forest but it is always worth it, the coffee is good!
Lastovo is a sleepy village with a maze of winding narrow streets and flights of stone steps, it is totally captivating. Fumar is the word for chimney and they are a specific characteristic of houses here. They are high and cylindrical and the Lastovo "fumari" used to be status symbols for particular families. Today they feature in the municipal emblem. Each one is is unique.
So now I've swapped stone walls for chimneys.....
We have never walked so much in our lives. Several times we have tried to capture the gradient of the track on film but to no avail. The other day, we decided to walk to Zaklopatica for lunch. There is a restaurant there which specialises in lobster pasta so no further explanation is needed... This seaside village is three kilometres away, over several steep hills and the views were amazing. But when we made it, everything was closed! Not even a bar was open!
So we trudged back to Lastovo and enjoyed a delicious meal of sardines , vegetable moussaka and of course a typical Croatian salad all washed down with pivo and a delicious homemade red.
Yesterday we opted to walk around the corner and spend the day swimming. We took a picnic lunch.
We have learned several valuable lessons since we have been in Croatia -
Always taste your food before seasoning it..
Always ensure you are within walking distance of home after a grappa session..
Always wear rubber shoes when swimming
Always carry a dictionary
And always telephone ahead to determine the opening hours of your chosen restaurant...
