Life in Oz!
I'm here! I'm finally here! The trip went really well. Instead of taking off from MSP at 5:14pm on Monday, it was about 5:40. I took about a 45-minute nap during the flight and talked to the nice woman that was sitting next to me. We got into LA around 7pm their time. I ended up going out past security and wondering down by the baggage claim trying to figure out how to get to my next gate. I saw a guy looking just as lost as me and we happened to both be looking for the same flight. Chris and I wondered around for a while and finally figured out where to go. We still had 3 hours to spare when we got to the gate. The gate was a gathering of college students. I'm willing to bet about 80% of our flight was study abroad students (the plane held 350-400 people). While we waited, we walked around, met some people and played some cards. I had recognized two girls from the MSP to LA flight and so I asked them where they were going and it happed to be USC also. Chris is from Michigan and is going to the University of New South Whales in Sydney. Andrea and Brooke are from MSU Moorhead and are living in Varsity Apartments, which are right across the street from UniCentral where I am staying. To board the plane we had to go outside and get on a shuttle bus, the bus drove us a long ways away to the huge 747 we were on. The plane was awesome and so were the people I sat with. They were both Australian and a lot of fun. Greg reminded me of Jim Carey with all of his expressions and weird humor. Helen was a great lady. She said if I even go to the Gold Coast, she would love to have me stay with her. They decided to nickname me Possum because my eyes were always sparkling and I had the biggest smile on my face the whole way there, I also kept giving them updates of how long it would be before we got there. I only slept for about 4 hours and then I got up and the 3 of us were talking to one of the flight attendants and random people that were walking around. The seats weren't very spacious but we all got our own screen and could pick between a few TV shows or about 7 movies to watch. You could also listen to music or watch the flight path of the plane as we went. We got supper, breakfast, and a bag full of snacks. We landed in Brisbane about 7:30 this morning (Wednesday) or 3pm on Tuesday MN time. It was beautiful when we walked outside for the first time in Brisbane. The sky was a little overcast but the sun was still shining somewhat. The bus driver picked us up at the airport and brought is directly to UniCentral. The drive was about an hour I think; it was somewhat woodsy with some open spaces. I haven't seen any kangaroos yet but I did see a sign on the motorway for them (deer crossing sign). There were 5 of us from the plane that are living in UniCentral and another 3 or 4 went to Varsity Apartments. We got a short tour of the complex and then we checked into our rooms. I live on the 3rd floor, it's not too bad but the balcony is rather small. I got 4 keys. One for my room and outside door, one for the gate to get into the UniCentral complex, one for my cupboard in the kitchen and one for my mailbox. I unpacked and took a shower (yay) and then met my roommates. Emma is a 1st year student from Brisbane and Diego (as in Dora the Explorer's cousin) and his friend (neither Emma nor I can remember his name) are from Chili. They are here with a language program and will only be here another 5 weeks. I haven't gotten a chance to talk to any of them very much but they all seem really nice. While getting my picture taken for my UniCentral I.D. I met Tara who is from Brisbane. I came back and looked through all of the info they gave is when we checked in. We got a lot of pamphlets with all sorts of info and a bag with food in it. That was exciting because I didn't have any food yet and I was getting hungry. There were 2 packs of ramen-type noodles, animal crackers, water, sugar, orange juice drink, chocolate, coffee, tea and milk. The milk says it will stay fresh for up to 9 months without refrigeration because it was pasteurized at an ultra high temperature...weird. It's 7:30pm here (3:30am MN) and I am exhausted so I am giving up and going to bed.
