My Camino Journey
Today was one filled with emotions. It started out like any other day of walking, at 6am with headlamps on, and like the last couple of days we had some hills to contend with, there weren't huge but I think just knowing today was our last day, our mind were already done and dusted and our bodies really wanted to be as well. We had to make sure we got 2 stamps before we got to Santiago so we could collect our Compostela before we checked in to our hotel. We stopped at the 10km mark and had bacon and eggs and coffee for breakfast, we got a stamp there and where back on the path in about half an hour. The plan was to get to Santiago as early as possible so we could enjoy the day there and celebrate. At some stages during the morning both Sonia and I felt like we were walking around in circle and joked that this was the final challenge that the Camino throws at you, when you are so close to the end, she makes you feel like you running in circles and not getting anywhere, we just had to have faith that if we kept putting one foot in front of the other today would finish like every other day, with us at our destination. We passed by the Santiago airport and literally walked 10 Meters from the end of the runway, it was amazing, I was hoping that a plane would take off while we were walking under it, it would have been so cool to be that close, it would have been loud that's for sure.... The rest of the days walking was pretty uninteresting, walking along the highway, through tiny villages and the last remaining forest before you hit the city. Then walked about 2km in the town before coming into the plaza at the cathedral, walking in there and seeing all the people already there, celebrating, hugging, crying, taking photos and bumping into people they may not have seen for a couple of day was truly heart warming. I had made it to the end of my journey. I had done what I had set out to do and in that moment I had an overwhelming feeling of accomplishment and pride, I even started to tear up. We all took photos and savoured the feeling for a short while. It was 12.05 and because there was a pilgrims mass at 12 we thought w would take advantage of this and headed to the pilgrims office to get our certificates, hopefully with all the pilgrims in mass the line will be shorter....... And we were right, we still had to wait for an hour in line, but that's nothing compared to some people that end up waiting hours and hours...... With certificates in hand it was now official, we had completed the Camino.... Time to celebrate. We found a nice place for lunch and had a few drinks to celebrate before heading to our hotel to check in. I was blown away by my room... Or should I say rooms... It was a 2 room suite, I had never had anything so fancy, three was 1 room with a white leather lounge suit and big TV then the bathroom with spa bath and bedroom with a king size bed.... After sleeping in bunk beds for over a month is was pure luxury..... We met back up at 7pm for dinner and found this amazing little lace that had great seafood, I tried these long oysters in asparagus and also had my favourite, Pulpo. We ordered sangria and enjoyed celebrating our accomplishment. Later as we were walking down the street we bumped into the Spanish group which are always up for a celebrations, Sonia said we should all go and have baileys together to celebrate, so we ducked into a cocktail bar, ordered 10 baileys and had a lovely time celebrating. I am so lucky to have met up with suck a great group of people, all are from different walks of life and speak different languages but it's amazing how everyone can still get along and communicate, if only the whole world could do the Camino I feel like everyone would be more understanding and accepting of each other. They have inspired me in more ways than 1 and I hope that I can continue to feel like this when I get home.
