My Camino Journey
Today everyone that was in my room must have had ants in their pants.... I was woken up at 4am to the sound of people packing up and getting ready to leave, I almost jumped out of bed myself thinking it must have been around 6 or 6.30 because of the number of people awake.... Lucky I double checked my watch before hand and quickly rolled over and when back to sleep. I woke again at 6.30 to find my room empty apart from me and one other girl, that means it's definitely time to hit the road. A quick coffee and croissant from the bar around the corner and I was on my way. It was another beautiful morning, the air was fresh and the sky was clear, hopefully I would get a few kms under my belt before the sun came up! However I was a few kms out of town when I realised I was on a detour track which goes through Ventosa it wasn't a major drama but did add an extra 1.4km to my day, I decided I would make it worth while and stopped for a coffee once I reached the town. Ventosa was small but very pretty, and the coffee was great so the extra kilometres was worth it in the end haha. The rest of the day was spent walking through vineyards mostly which was nice but the clay paths were ******* your feet, my left knee was causing me a little grief in the morning but by midday it had subsided and only caused me pain when I was going down hill. As I arrived into Najera I met a guy named Tom, he was American and was looking for an Albergue to stay in as well, the public Albergue which doesn't take bookings has 90 beds in 1 room, so we decided to try and give that a miss if we can cause it will be extremely loud and hard to sleep. We found Puerta de Najera in the book which listed it has 34 beds in 6 rooms, they do take reservations but we thought we would try our luck there... As we rounded the corner to our surprise there was nobody out the front, we got to the door and it wasn't even open yet.... The sign said it opened at 12 noon, we had half an hour to wait, and it paid off... We were the first pilgrims in without a reservation and were able to secure a bed for the night... Another successful day. Tomorrow I think I will try get up early and make it the 21.3kms to Santo Domingo de la Calzada, there is an Albergue with 140 beds there so surly I will be ok tomorrow night also.
