My Camino Journey
Today was a long day, so thankfully we decided to send our backpacks forward so we didn't have to carry them. We left our Albergue in Fonfria at 6.30am and felt as light as a feather with out carrying the extra weight of bags.... It started out quite cold and was foggy until the sun came up. Once w e could see what was around us we were not surprised that it was beautiful rolling hills and trail after trail of amazing greenery and beautiful villages which had both old and new homes. The landscape has really changed a lot since the Meseta, no more wheat fields and dry grass, it's now all corn fields and green paddocks full of cows, the paths are shaded by big old trees and can sometimes look a little bit creepy, but still very beautiful. Today there were still a lot of up and down hills, not as steep as yesterday but it certainly slowed me down more than usual. I have become quite slow on the declines because of my knees, Sonia has been super kind and let me use one of her sticks the last couple of day. This has been an amazing help to take the pressure of my knees. Both Phil and Sonia have laughed while watching me coming down hills with my 80 year old knees.... Hehe We passed by a tiny little village which had this cute little bridge through a farm, we all stopped to take pictures, on the other side of the bridge there was this tiny little church, it was no longer in use, but you could see inside, it would be no bigger than a single car garage, with an alter and a few chairs... Ralph got this idea he wanted to ring the bell.... And without a second thought climbed up on the roof and started ringing it.... We stood there hoping he wouldn't fall through the roof. The bell didn't look like it had been rung in 100 years, but today it did (pic attached, only a crazy yank would do something like that) We finally made it into town just before 3pm, our bags had arrived thankfully and we showered and had some relaxing time. We wanted to go out for dinner to celebrate Phils birthday, he was 55 today. We found this nice little Italian restaurant, ordered Pizza, drank Lambrusco and had a great night, even finding out that the owner of the restaurant was also celebrating his birthday today as well, he was 53, he brought out a little cake with a candle in it as a surprise and we sung happy birthday. It was a great celebration. When we were walking back to our Albergue we bumped into some other friends and they also sung happy birthday in Spanish to phil, again it was spontaneous which is what made it so great. I think Phil really enjoyed his 55th birthday in Spain.
