My Camino Journey
This morning I woke early as planned, I set my alarm at 5.15am and surprisingly was not the first to be awake. I was on the road by 5.45am and as I walked through the the town I was a little concerned to hear thunder, followed by a big clap of lighting...... Because it was still dark I wouldn't tell how heavy the clouds were and decided to make a quick stop to pull out my rain jacket, change my shoes and have my waterproof backpack cover at hand should it start raining. 5 minutes prep and I was back walking also now with my head lamp on because I had left the town and it was pitch black, there was 2 other girls just up ahead and I made pace so I could catch up and not walk alone, however I got the feeling they weren't to happy about it, they didn't have lights and it seemed the closer I got the faster they walked...... So I took the hint and backed off to a steady pace and was just happy knowing that up ahead in the distance there were people, fingers crossed they didn't get lost..... After 6.1km I stopped at the first cafe I came across at Azofra and had a cafe con leche and a chocolate croissant which made getting out of bed worth every seconds, I only stopped for about 10 minutes as I really wanted to make as much distance as I could before the rain, the thunder had rolled off into the distance and I was thankful that I was saved from being rained on today. As I was walking through the fields and vineyards I was blessed to see another amazing sunrise. Another 8km and I was in Ciruena which started out with a fancy golf course but then as you continue it becomes a soulless new suburb with street after street of empty new apartment block, they have been there for sometime but nobody has ever lived there. Which meant there was no cafe or bar to stop at.... So on I walked, grateful that today was a cooler day as there was not a lot of shelter along the track. There were plenty of people walking around me but none who I knew already, the few that I have made friends with had surly stayed in bed longer than I had, hopefully I will met with them again. I love when I can see the town in the distance, but today it seemed like it wasn't getting any closer for ages..... Walking walking walking and Santo Domingo de Calzada was still off in the distance....... Finally it seemed I was close and I know I had made good time as it was only 11am. The finally couple of kilometres into town were slow but flat, so I couldn't complain. I got to the Albergue Casa de la Cofradia del santo to be informed by the nice man at the desk that I was the first to arrive.... Happy Happy Happy. I checked in and showered and cleaned my clothes while others were still arriving, it was all totally worth getting up early for, also while I was having some lunch who should stroll into town but Bert the Dutch man, the last couple of days had really taken a toll on him and he has decided that tomorrow he will rest... It rained in the afternoon quite heavy and the forecast for tomorrow is rain also, so I am going to sleep for as long as possible and have already come to terms with the fact I will be wet tomorrow... Bert and I had dinner together and then he went to bed early, he said maybe I wouldn't see him again and wished me a buen Camino, I did the same but am sure I will see him at some stage along the track.
