My Camino Journey
So after 2 consecutive days of 20km I decided today would be a short day. I still woke at 6.30am even though I was in a hotel room on my own, but did enjoy a long shower to start my day, and was still out on the street at 7.30am. On my way to find the elusive Spanish ATM's I stumbled across people setting up for a marathon which was running in the town today, there were huge adidas signed up everywhere and it looked like they were hosting the finish line, go team adidas :) Once I found the ATM and was cashed up again the next important thing was coffee and food, heading back on the Camino track I soon found a cafe and was enjoying a cafe con leche and Danish in no time. I was well on my way by 8.30am and the first stretch today was through a large park and nature reserve, I almost felt like I was on the Spanish version of the tan.... There were loads of people walking their dogs, running and riding bikes. Once I made it to the other side of the nature reserve where it was a little more quiet I noticed there were squirrels running around to my right, I stopped and slowly go closer. They were very curious as well and came up really close to me, I did get a few pictures but didn't dare touch them, knowing my lucky they would bite me or something haha..... Up and around the corner and I was at the top of the hill and at the edge of a beautiful lake, and I was surprised at how many people where there fishing.... I didn't hang around to see if anyone was catching anything. The rest of the day walking was pretty uneventful, mostly bikes just passed me and no people to walk or talk to, there was a long section which followed the highway and was very mundane. Once I made it into town I found the Navarrete central Albergue and to my surprise it wasn't open yet.... With 50 beds available and only 5 other people there I knew I would be right, another days walking done. Once I had checked in, got my bed, showered and done all my washing, it was finally time to find something to eat and drink.... There was a bar just around the corner and to my surprise when I turned the corner Courtney was sitting there enjoying a wine on her own. I had met Courtney back on day one in Utegra and we had been passing each other on and off, but I hadn't seen her for the last 2 days and wondered if I was in front or behind...... I got a drink and something to eat and sat with Courtney, she is from New York and is very easy to talk to, we ended up staying at the bar for hours, including dinner which was delicious. 8.30pm rolled around seemingly quick and Courtney and I decided we both were more than ready for Bed, our bellies were full and more than enough wine had been consumed. We were staying in different Albergues so we wished each other a good evening and I made the short trip back to my bed. Today I am grateful for Bumping into Courtney again, she is such a nice person and easy to talk to. It felt like I was back home and having a chat up meal with one of my girlfriends.
