My Camino Journey
Before going to bed Silas and I discussed that we should make sure we're are up early and out on the road by 7am tomorrow, we then should have no problem getting a bed in the next town.... I set my alarm, knowing that because it was just the 2 of us in a room chances are we would sleep late again if I didn't. Alarm goes off at 6.30 and we are packed and out on the road by 7am, we felt bad leaving the home without saying goodbye or thank you, but Amy has been a pilgrim before and would understand the need to be up and out early. There was not a great sunrise because it was still pretty overcast and cold, but we were making good time and by just before 1pm we rolled into Castrojeriz and found beds at the first Albergue which was so lovely, the people running it were amazing and I was so grateful to finally have a shower after a rough couple of days. And what do you know..... Sonia and Phil were also in this albergues, we had a laugh with them about the previous day's dramas and updated me on the story... We had dinner in the Albergue and then the owner gave us all a tour of the basement down stairs which used to be apart of the 18th century tunnel system from the castle which was at the top of the hill in town, in total there was over 2km of tunnel system which was used as escape routes and battle bunkers during times of conflict between the Catholics and the moors (Muslims) after he explained all the history behind the basement cellar we also got to taste his wine which was made on the premises using grapes from the local area. Once this was done I was exhausted and decided to go to bed early tomorrow is going to be a big day of 24.9km and after the last couple of full on days I needed plenty of rest.
