My Camino Journey
Today is my first full day in Barcelona and I have organised a 2 hour Segway Tour so I can get my bearings and see some of the main sights, then tonight I will be heading out to see a flamenco dancing music and dancing show. The Segway tour wasn't until 1pm so I had a nice relaxing morning, found a spot to have breakfast and then wandered around a little (found the adidas store which I would return to after the tour) The weather in Barcelona has so far not been impressive, my original plane was to have these last couple of day relaxing in the sun on a beach.... Mother Nature obviously didn't get my request because I have had to have my waterproof jacket on ever since I arrived :( I was of course the last to arrive at the Segway meeting point.... Even though I was still early, I was with a group of 5 Americans, all of whom were from the same family, so for a split second I felt like the awkward unwanted child... That was until we got on the segways, which is when I all of a sudden became the favourite child, this American family really really struggled on the segways, even to the point where one girl couldn't even step on to it without somehow making it jump forward on her..... It was hilarious to watch. I stepped up on my and was up and running without a problem, lucky I had practice the other day in Madrid hehe After about 15 minutes of practise the tour guide said we should start, and just go slow until everyone got the hang of it... The first half hour of the tour was very slow, stopping at every light waiting for this family to catch up and at one point watching the dad get stuck in the middle of the road cause he couldn't make it go forwards or backwards.... That first part of the the tour was more entertaining than educational. They eventually all started to get it and although they still seemed to look extremely awkward they started to pick up the pace... We passed through Parc de la Ciutadella which was originally built as a military for, it now has the Zoo there and is an amazing garden with a lake and beautiful huge fountain. We went through where the Olympic village was and down to the man made beach, and along the boardwalk which was all constructed for the Olympics, it now has some amazing seafood restaurants and bars down there and reminded me a little of st kilda or port Melbourne. We stopped at loads of statues and up narrow lane ways in the gothic section of town which is the original section, and stopped at the last remaining section of Roman wall which used to run around the entire city. After a monument and history overload we headed back to our starting point, by this stage I was hungry and my fingers were numb because of the cold, I quickly found a nice warm place to eat and was feeling much better after my fingers came back to life. Now on the the next important thing for today.... adidas I walked quickly like an excited little kid. This store was huge, 2 levels of adidas paradise and they even had there own team of security guards haha. I picked up a few essentials (2 pairs of shoes, 1 of which is not for me... And 2 jackets) I could have got so much more but I used all the control I have and stopped myself haha Walking back to my hotel with adidas bags in hand I was very happy with how the day was going. Time to rest and get ready for the flamenco show tonight. The show was at 8.30, I got there a little bit earlier and was surprised at how small the venue was, no matter where you were you had a good view. I had never seem flamenco dancing in real life before and boy was it impressive, the speed in which they move is unbelievable, and the music and voices of the band were just amazing. I wish it had gone for longer than it did. After the show I found a restaurant just nearby and had dinner and enjoy people watching in the busy square. It wasn't until 10pm that I thought I better get going I started walking but then felt a little uneasy, being out that late by myself so I jumped in a cab and took the short 10 minute drive back to my hotel.
