Title: Monday, day 12 at sea.
There's an old saying that goes:
Red sky at night, sailor's delight
Red sky in the morning, sailor take warning.
We had a red sky this morning and the winds got stronger and the waves got bigger. A lot bigger! I would say they are 12 feet at least and the winds are 27 to 30 knots and gusting to 38.
I love being at the helm in this kind of weather. It is such a rush! You rise to the top of a wave and it looks like the sea level is 100 feet below you. Then the boat begins to slip sideways as it surfs down the wave. A mountain of water towers above you. I tried to take some pictures but they don't really capture the thrill.
The best thing is that it's not a storm that we're in. It's just wind and waves and a few scattered clouds.
Today, as the conditions got worse, Barry asked Mirko to put the second reef in the main. I don't know what he did wrong, but Barry started yelling at him and calling him a f-in idiot. I said to myself, "it's reactions like that that will cost you a crew.". Mirko almost left in Virgin Gorda because he was treated dis-respectfully. Mirko was very withdrawn for the rest of the day.
