Today was our last day with the older students. We were teaching them three songs to sing for their "puppet show" on Friday. Since it is our last day, we wanted the older students to sing for the teachers and younger students and the younger students to sing for the teachers and older students. We decided to have the older kids (P2, P3, and P4) sing Waka Waka, Hakuna Matata, and In the Jungle. They did a great job learning all three of these songs with very little preparation. In addition to singing, each class made a different animal puppet. P2 did lions, P3 did elephants, and P4 did toucans. They were too stinken cute. Listening to the students sing Waka Waka was awesome because they would sing very quietly during the verses and then break out in song and dance during the refrain!
Throughout the trip, the neighborhood kids have written individual letters to us. We decided that we wanted to write letters to all of the kids before we left. So we divided the kids up and each had about 8 letters to write to the kids. We colored pictures for the little kids too. We worked on those letters during the afternoon and into the late hours. Playing with the kids was especially hard because we could tell they knew we were leaving soon and that made them so sad. Earlier in the week, some of the kids took me to a nearby hut and sang me songs about how much they would miss me-- it led me to tears!
Tomorrow we will be having a party for the kids after school. However, word got out that the kids were telling their parents that they will not be going to school on Friday because "their friends are leaving". This was news to us considering we would be in the school and clinic on Friday. We made sure to explain to the kids that if they didn't go to school, there would be no party.
That night, we also sorted out all of the clothes and toys we were leaving for the kids. We had about 100 items of clothes and toys. We filled up one of the rooms with skirts, dresses, shorts, shirts, bras, underwear, socks, baby clothes, headbands, clips, shoes, balls, and other stuff. Certain items were labeled for certain people but we wanted everything to get at least one thing, if not two.
Kyarusozi neighborhood drama-- One of our friends, Kymimongi, is in her first year at secondary school. There was a rumor going around that her family ate people which got back around to her. One of the 10 year old boys repeated it to the other neighborhood boys and Kymihongi overheard. She was devastated. We had to work with both her and Happy to discuss this problem and figure out a resolution. WOW-- we couldnt even believe that a 10 year old could say that.
