We have finally arrived in Kyarusozi at about 2pm this afternoon!! After a beautfiful (and long) drive through rural Uganda, we arrived at the convent. The convent is a lot bigger than we all expected and the best part of the trip was being greeted by the neighborhood children as soon as we pulled in to the convent. All of the drivers we have had have been amazing. Today we had Patrick who loved to laugh at our jokes and eat pretzels. The sisters are amazing women and I am so excited to start working with them. The food has been so far so good, a lot of carbohydrates which means I need to do a lot of walking to the school
I am going to rewind to yesterday....
We had our class with Professor Miguda on East African history to help us get acclimated to the African culture. We recognized and discussed many of the American stereotypes about Africans and their culture. Professor Miguda told us that safari means journey in swahili so I thought it was a perfect fit for the title! The best part about the class was when we took a bus tour of Entebbe and the nearby towns. It was amazing to see mansions/five story hotels one minute and then see a section of shacks along the roads. All of the people were so welcoming and friendly and the children would run beside the van! I was amazed by the optimism and comfort displayed by the African people as we drove by their houses that were made of dirt floors and had curtains as doors. We then stopped at the Botanical Gardens that had monkeys, flamingos, termite hills, and views of the beach. Note to all: do not try to hold a monkey. It is not normal to do in Africa. The monkeys almost ate me! Once again, we had another driver named Patrick during this trip who was more than accomodating as we ventured around the towns.
Tomorrow will be our first day in the school. I cannot wait. We are finally here!
