On Friday, we headed to Fort Portal to spend two nights with the Sisters in Fort Portal. Sister Lillian would be coming with us to Queen Elizabeth National Park on Sunday so we spent some time at the convent. We have been so lucky with the Holy Cross network that we have been able to find places to stay!
We planned to get up at 9am on Saturday to go hiking in the foothills of the Rwenzori mountains. It was one of the most beautiful sights I have ever seen. At times, we found a path, but at other times, we created our own path up the steep mountains. In the middle of the group of mountains was one crater lake that we all wished we could jump into. At the end of our adventure, we had one small problem—we forgot our cellphone in the car with Sister Lillian. Luckily, the novitiate is located about ten minutes away so we were able to walk there and call! PHEW! Later that afternoon, we stopped by a local soccer (futbol) tournament in the town center. It was a highschool tournament of boys U17. However, by the looks of the crowds, we thought it was university or above. The place was full of people, music, and spunk. Joy and I were able to go on the field and shoot PK's during halftime! As most of you would guess, I was ecstatic! As the announcers yelled, "Mzungus mzungus!!", all eyes were on us! We eventually worked our way over to the other side where the fans had signs, flags, and instruments. They pushed us to the front and helped us out with cheers. It was hysterical. Then came the end of the game, and the DJ (the tournament was sponsored by Airtel) asked for some people to come up on stage. He picked me—one of 7 mzungus in the crowd! Gen and I ran up and were introduced to the crowd. We were asked to dance and were given free t-shirts! (The cat daddy definitely came in handy.) It was great to see the support of the fans who were so lively and dedicated to their teams! We headed home and prepared for our early departure tomorrow.
