The power has been out since Sunday evening and it just came back on this morning (Wednesday). Luckily, we the generator was on so we could blog Sunday but we haven't been so lucky since. Cold showers, dark dinners, and bathroom breaks with flashlights. I have to admit, it all adds to this experience. And at least we have toilets-- I failed to mention what we came across when we were out to dinner last Saturday. A HOLE IN THE GROUND to go to the bathroom. Let me tell you, that is quite an experience.
But anyways, this week has been going great! I have decided that I want to teach a new letter of the alphabet to the students each day. I will teach them the lowercase and capital letters in manuscript, words that begin with the letters, and spelling with the letters. Fortunately, a group of Sisters from the East Coast donated individual white boards with one blank side and one lined side. We have brought these to Moreau Primary School and used them in our classes. The kids LOVE them and have responded very well to my lessons. I have also started to help out with math. The other day, I brought in skittles for the students to practice counting and every single hand shot up to volunteer.
The rainy season is coming to a close anytime this month; however, we had a HUGE storm on Monday afternoon- night so we couldn't play with the kiddies. We have been walking home from school which we discovered is 6km and usually takes us an hour. If you think the states are hilly, try walking these steeeeeeep hills.
Today was one of those pull-your-hair-out-of-your-head kind of day. It was going great until my teacher had to take a student over to the clinic for about 15 minutes. I was teaching music (Awesome God, Miss Susie had a Baby, and Jesus Loves Me) until it was time for storytelling and art. I asked the students to come listen to a story. Total disaster. Unfortunately, they still haven't grasped that I don't speak very much Ruturro so half of the class was going wild around the room. At that point, I had no control over the students since they couldn't understand what I was saying. I need to learn more phrases in Ruturro these next couple of weeks. This continued for the rest of the day :(
In about 15 minutes, we will be going running and playing with the kids. This is always one of my favorite parts of the day!!
Ogorobe!!! (Bye)
