In case you got worried, we are all still kicking over here in Kyarasozi! The computer broke for about a week so we did not have internet access. So let me give you a brief overview of the past week:
It was our second week in the school and each day has gotten better and better. I think the biggest challenge has been finding our roles in the classrooms without overstepping our boundaries. The teachers are still present in the classroom so we coordinate lessons and activities with them. Primarily, I am working with art, music, P.E., english/reading, and math. We have done some great art projects including modge podge-ing, coloring, drawing, and making our own butterflies.
As for the neighborhood kids, it is still the highlight of my day to look outside the window and see them standing at the gate around 4:30. I love playing soccer with them, singing and laughing with them, and, of course, holding the little ones! Last Wednesday, I held Robert who is 16 weeks old while he threw up on me 5 times. The children are amazing. They are so happy and would do anything for all of us. When it gets dark they will tell us we have to go home and walk us to our gate. (And these kids are 7-10!!!!)
This weekend was a blast. Across the street are two Notre Dame students and another one lives about 15 minutes away. They came over for homemade pizza on Friday! Then on Saturday, we headed to Fort Portal with Brother Leonard and the 2 Notre Dame students to go DANCING! We stayed at the novitiate in Fort Portal and went to dinner at Africana with really good pork and some great brewskis (The Nile Special..mmmm) and headed over to Club Ecstacy-- oh what a night! The cover was 15, 0000...... shillings! On Sunday, we jumped into the largest Crater Lake in Uganda and enjoyed the beautiful day. Everything in Uganda is absolutely breathtaking, filled with color and excitement. As we drove back to Kyarosozi, we fed the bamboons bananas.
Today at school was the best day yet. I brought in the dry-erase boards to work on subtraction and did a game with skittles. I was also able to start working with them with the letters and continue music. I have asked my teacher about more ideas that I can plan for this week so I am very excited to continue working with the students. The students LOVE my hair and MY ARM HAIR!! who would have thought that would be such popular entertainment.
My pet name is: Atourki!!!
I will keeep updating you alll!
