Today marks the second day that we have been in the school with the children! It is a primary school where all the students wear uniforms and pay school tution. They have just broken ground for the new school that will be built next spring and the school will go up to P7 (7th grade). Currently it has classrooms for students in Baby Nursery and Top Nursery (Kindergarten) to P4 (4th grade). Next to the school is the clinic where the 3 nursing girls spend their mornings and afternoons.
On Wednesday (yesterday), we woke up around 6am, showered, packed our bags, and made toast with peanut butter. We walked over to the church with the sisters and had mass. As soon as we got out of the convent, the local children came running to introduce themselves and walk with us to church. I was already in heaven and it was only 7am. After, we drove to school which is about a 15 minute drive through dirt roads and hilly terrain. When we got to the school, we spent some time in each classroom to see what classroom we wanted to work with. However, we were shocked by the students' reactions to our arrival. Although they were excited and eager, they had a lot of trouble understanding us and would giggle with one another. This made us very nervous but we knew they would get better as the days went by! I will be in Top Nursery (kindergarten) on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday from 8-1 and we will help out with art, music, and other subjects on Tuesday and Thursday with the upper grades.
After school we decided to attempt the walk home and see how long it would take us. ONE HOUR AND 16 MINUTES! Woo hoo! we made it! Of course, we squeezed a nap in after. Then we went out to go for a run and the neighborhood kids came with us. I would make them stop and walk with me and when it was time to run again they would say, "Nora RUNNN". So I ran. We played outside with them for about 2 hours and honestly it felt like 30 minutes. We were all so happy as we played soccer and frisbee, chased each other around, and talked!
Today was even better! We went to school and taught music and did icebreaker activities with P1, P2, P3, and P4! They LOVED it and were so excited! we made nametags for all of the kids and those made their eyes light up. We were going to walk back but then got a ride haha.
Each day gets better and better and the students' smiles are so rewarding
