Well, I'm sitting here at ye olde greyhound bus station (which I'm getting really quite familiar with by now!) having been talked into heading up to Whistler again this weekend with the boys to ski….OK…so they didn't really to work THAT hard to twist my arm and convince me to go! Haha But midway through yet another enthralling 3 hour statistics lecture on Thursday I decided there was really no way I could let opening weekend go by when my brand new skis are just sitting up there in the shed practically begging to be taken out for a run!
I have that inevitable end of term go go go feeling at the moment where everything increases ten fold. Work. Fun. Studying. Partying. We have little over a fortnight now to cram in all the remaining good times with my Euro crew, and frankly no time would ever be enough. But hey! We make do with what we have. When I got back down from Whis in the Monday I was feeling pretty wrecked and crawled into bed to try and recuperate because the next night's shenanigans. Tuesday night Jessie and I had tickets to Fedde le Grand, and oh what good times we had! Despite me seeing Fedde for all of about 30 seconds. I kid you not. Interesting story…
We met up for dinner at Veronique's place for dinner beforehand and Jessie had the incredibly good sense to tell me to ditch my heels and lent me a pair of sneaker instead - in the scheme of life decisions that I will look back on in years to come, I'm quite sure I will reminisce on this having been one of the best choices I ever made! We headed out in style (and comfort!) with a few last threatening words thrown at Jop down the hallway regarding the ass kicking that the Netherlands should expect in the snow fight rematch this week against Aus! Oh…it's on!
We took the sky train out to Lougheed to pick up some supplies and then had one of those fabulous, crazy pre-going out rambling public transport conversations that I'm sure was really quite entertaining for everyone else on the sky train haha Then when we got down town we found our way to Caprice night club where we stood in line and rambled some more before finally making it inside to….nothing. Noone. Practically deserted. And this was at 9:30…which, OK is early in club speak, but still! I assumed that because they were actually having a "concert" of sorts there that things would get going a little earlier…after all, I was pretty much relying solely on the wonders of a grande coffee and Nodoz to get me through the night have barely slept for oh…72 hours or so!
Anyway, we decided we weren't really up for waiting for the rest of the world, so we hit the stark empty d-floor and danced…without shame. This is one of the things I love most about Jessie, she's just like me in that respect. We love to dance, and we don't care who's watching. And slowly but surely, people were tempted away from their safe little spots at the bar and floor began to fill up around us - oh yeah, you need a dance floor started, we are the ladies to call! So, this went on for oh…3 hours or so, and I'm thinking yeah, cool, I'm having fun…but WHERE IS FEDDE??? I was beginning to reach that incredibly sleepy point where I literally think I was sleep dancing most of the time, eyes shut, doing to two step!
And then he appeared!! For 30 seconds…before disappearing again. And I was like, O….kay…It's 12:30, I'm so tired I think my arms are going to drop off, my eyelids feel like sandpaper and he's not even playing!!! Eventually I threw in the towel and got in a taxi, while Jessie decided to stay on with the rest of the exchangers (most of whom hadn't spent the whole bloody weekend in Whistler) - I love Fedde, but at that stage of the night, I loved sleep more. Besides which it was still one of the best nights I've had out in Van with Jessie so I really can't complain!
I pulled up outside JL's place and knocked tentatively on the door…she answered it and without a moment's hesitation sat me down and made me eggs! I'm telling you, I'm a very very lucky girl (hear that Mum, I'm being very well looked after hehe). She was still up having come off night shift the day before and having generally totally crazy sleep patterns, and she actually thanked me for forcing her to go to bed else she'd have stayed up til five in the morning! I know…crazy right? haha
So the next morning, it was actually a pretty beautiful day and every ounce of my being was screaming "no!" to the idea of statistics and cognitive neuroscience. JL and I decided to for a walk up to a park near her area (Queen Elizabeth Park), which has a beautiful view down over the city. It was so nice to get out and about in the fresh air, and by the time we got back to her place and had settled in with a cup of tea, I was sensing it was going to be a very unproductive day study-wise…so I decided to go with the flow! We went down to the little art house cinema on Cambie street in the late afternoon to watch a French film and then on our way home we made a stop at the amazing Cambie cheese shop to pick up some nibblies for the evening.
The next few days it was crunch time, not cool. BUT it's the weekend, I'm on my way to the snow, my new skis await and life is good!
