Oo I'm a bad, lazy little blogger! Apologies for complete lack of updates in the past few weeks…oh where to begin now…Halloween!
Last Friday was Halloween, and apparently, all over North America, that's a pretty big deal. I've never seen anything like it. The lead up to it was a little like the retail frenzy that happens at home before Christmas. Tell you what, these North American retailers are onto something, because they sail smoothly from Thanksgiving, right into Halloween and the moment the pumpkins come down the Christmas decorations go up! So, very exciting week indeed.
First of all, I had a small but significant triumph over Mr Macho next door (I have an ongoing silent feud with my 4:00AM bass thumping, walls vibrating, totally-oblivious-to-the-existence-of-others neighbour). It was Thursday night, I knew I had a 12 hour stretch (at least) of partying ahead of me the next day, and at 11:30, on comes the bass, thumping away (I'm really not kidding about my walls vibrating either). So I stick my head around the door tentatively to tell him politely to shut the hell up, only to find he's not there. He's not even in his room. The door is wide open, the music is cranking, he's nowhere to be seen. I finally found him down the corridor in somebody else's room and using a whole lot of self restraint, I refrained from physical violence and asked him politely to turn it down. He obliged, seeming genuinely surprised that it might be bothering me…like I said - oblivious.
So anyway! Come Friday I am SUPER excited for my first true Halloween experience! I have the Minnie Mouse costume all set and ready to go (finally, an occasion to wear my red dress with white polka dots that I affectionately call by "Minnie mouse dress" actually AS Minnie Mouse!), white gloves (not so white by the end of the night, pretty sure they never will be again but that's why I spent a grand total of $2 on them), ears (surprisingly difficult to make, but my Radio Lollipop honed craft skills prevailed!) - the whole shebang! Admittedly I felt a little strange walking over the Jessie's place totally dressed up like this at 2 in the afternoon…but just an hour before I'd been eating lunch in the dining hall and looked across to see a guy fully dressed up as the Joker sitting across from me tucking into a sandwich so I figure it's pretty normal on a day like this (oh and when I was at the dining hall, Sophia - the lovely dining hall lady - gave me trick or treat candy, the best kind, Reece's pieces! Two - because we don't have them back home in Aus hehe =P).
Jessie looked absolutely fabulous! AMAZING Joker makeup - really quite scary, except that we had to do quite a bit of practice getting her to do an "evil look" because frankly, she just couldn't be evil if she tried! Haha We were quite an odd pair that night - cute little Disney character, and evil, maniacal murderer. Veronique went as a hippie and I got to do my very first make over in months since leaving the Body Shop - I went to town with blue eye shadow and sparkles and generally had a fine old time, she looked just gorgeous. At around 3pm we decided it was wine time, only V had bought wine without a screw top, and we discovered absolutely nobody on her floor had a bottle opener. Fortunately the boys arrived soon after and Heiko did some fancy work with a pen and basically pushed the cork into the bottle (this isn't a technique I'd generally recommend but you know, desperate times…=P) About an hour later Monica arrived from class and was brave enough to surrender herself to my makeup abilities AFTER a glass or two of wine - but I surprised myself and managed to pull off liquid eyeliner, red lipstick and a perfectly formed beauty spot to complete her Marilyn Monroe look!
Dennis and Heiko came as 80's gym instructors, and I can honestly say I've never seen anything so hideous. Fabulous, but hideous. It was fluro, and mullets, sweat bands - oh my! When we got on the bus to go down town it was hilarious to watch the sideways glances from Joe Public, I was like, oh please, you're just jealous you don't have sexy short shorts like that! Lol When we got down town we started our epic club crawl from an Irish Pub called the Blarney Stone, we went to about 4 clubs in all and it was very VERY good times =D There were SO many exchangers, we practically took over our section of the crawl - literally, whole bus loads of us. Made me realise just how awesome this group of people is and how lucky I've been to end up in this place and this time, with these particular people. We danced and danced and DANCED and when it finally came time to head home, at around 2:30, I decided there was no way in hell I was getting on the 135 and riding for an hour back to SFU. I jumped in a cab, headed to JL's place, snuck in and collapsed on the couch - I have never felt such bliss as the moment I took my shoes off that night…
At 6 the next morning JL walked out to go to work and it was like "hello Olivia" haha very matter of fact! Unfortunately I hadn't the foresight to think about getting home next day and there was no way I was making that trip in heels (not to mention a Minnie Mouse outfit) so I dug around in JL's cupboard, found an old pair of trackies, chucked on some crocs (oh so ugly, and not EVEN comfy! Not when they're 5 sizes too small anyway), crossed my fingers and prayed to God I didn't run into anyway I knew. Through the searing pain in my feet I can see how I probably looked quite hilarious…
Things got a bit lame between now and then, I had a midterm, a stats assignment, and we descended into cloud and what will now be endless rain (at least for the next 7 months or so!). The thought of this somewhat depressed me until I got an email from Whistler Blackcomb reporting over 40cm of snow fall in the past 3 days!! And the other day I looked out my window and could see the beginnings of little white peaks on the local mountains!! Eeeee! My heart soared and I practiced the BC mantra - if it's raining in the city, it's snowing in the mountains…this is how the people here survive months and months of drizzling, incessant rain. But whereas back at home in Perth things seem to come to a bit of a stand still when it's cold and drizzly - you go out less, there's more hermitizing etc etc here, because this is par for course the majority of the year there's no time to be perturbed by rain!
So last night, out I went, skipping over puddles down the road in my oh so impractical white points. It's Jessie's birthday next week but she insists she doesn't want to celebrate so we went out in non-celebration of her birthday (haha oh any excuse will do…). I'd been down town that day at JL's having a little hair dying, face masking, body scrubbing frenzy (this kind of stuff is a little tricky to do in a communal residence bathroom!) so I met the girls over at Sebastian and Dennis's place. We drank, danced and were merry - had ourselves a little electro d-floor going on in their entrance hall which was totally going off too haha Then we did the whole stand on the street, lose people, indecisive thing for about an hour or so (haha what night would be complete without it!?) before finally settling on a club called Tonic on Granville street.
It was a fairly small, not particularly impressive club, but last night I couldn't have cared less. You know when you have the kind of group of friends where it really doesn't matter where you go, what music's playing, what everyone else in the club is doing - you just have an awesome time. That's my Euro crew =) We hit the d-floor hard and fast and everyone else in the club basically just had to get out of the way while limbs flailed in a pretty incredible display of frenzied dancing haha They played "one more time" and I was like oh Jessie they're playing our song!! Lol I smiled so much my face hurt =D
When I got in Jan Louise was up -fretting would you believe it! Haha we both found this very funny, because she's really not one to fret, ever, particularly about me coming home late! She made us tea and cheese on toast and we laughed about that too because when she visited us in Sydney when I was really little that was all I ever wanted to eat then as well =P Suffice it to say I think I'm pretty blessed to have the people in my life that I do…and chances are, if you're reading this, that means you! =)
