Well, we've made it to Vegas and I can honestly say this is one of the most bizarre, larger than life places I've ever experienced. Everything is huge. Everything is over the top. Everything is pretty ridiculous really hehe…You get off the plane and the first thing you see is a bunch of slot machines - right there in the airport! And they are everywhere! You can gamble, quite literally, any place any time. When we were having breakfast yesterday there were Keno slips on the table right next to the salt and pepper, and regardless of the time you're walking through the hotels there are hundreds of people scattered throughout the gaming floor. I hate to think of the electricity bill this place racks up keeping all those flashing lights going 24/7.
Another thing that's quite ridiculous about Vegas is the heat. The temperature outside has been up around 109 degrees Fahrenheit since we've been here (43 degrees Celsius) - oh and that's with a low of about 30 degrees C…so we were walking down the strip last night at about 9:00pm and it was still ridiculously hot. When the wind blows it feels a little like someone blasting you with a hairdryer. Fortunately so much of what goes on here in Vegas is inside the hotels that provided you survive the walk from one to the other, there's barely a need to go outside. In fact, we spent at least 15 minutes just trying to find the exit out of a single hotel complex this morning - you could probably get lost inside a single hotel forever!
Last night we went down to the Wynn hotel to see Le Reve, which is this amazing aerial circus show (think Cirque du Soleil without the expensive label =P) that's performed largely in water. The theatre it's performed in has obviously been built specifically for the show and the audience is seated in the round looking down on a pool of water with a platform in it that moves up and down in several parts. Often the performers would either randomly appear from under the water or jump in and never come out again. We were lucky enough to be in the second row so I spent a good deal of time peering around trying to work out where they were disappearing to but it's really quite impossible to tell…I guess that's all part of the magic. It was also pretty amazing how much they could alter the depth of the pool because at times it was knee deep, but at one point they dropped a guy from one of the trapezes about 20 minutes up into it and obviously it was a lot deeper then.
Today we had lunch at the buffet at the Bellagio hotel and again I was little overwhelmed by the extravagance involved. We waited a little over half an hour in the line to get in and when we did…wow. I've never seen so much food in my entire life. It was like having five different Sizzler buffets - like breakfast buffet (hot and cold), sushi, roast, seafood, Asian, cold pastries, deserts, fruit, salads…and that doesn't even really come close to describing the variety! It was like a world of yum - literally! Yum from all around the world haha
So we've stuffed our bellies and dragged our full, sleepy selves through the heat back to the hotel for an indulgent afternoon nap…
Sweet dreams,
