Day 58. Officially drove into 'the outback' today, according to roadside signage. We wondered if we had therefore left the 'inback'. Or the 'infront'? We arrived in Mt Magnet just after lunch and after setting up camp, walked around the town which has a few nice buildings. Then we drove out to look at Hill 50, the oldest gold mine still 'operational' in Oz. There is certainly a lot of activity around there but we are not sure about production at the moment. It is a huge open cut mine and there are mountains of tailings around. We went up to the lookout above the mine and walked along a track for a while. Met a young French couple cooking their dinner at the lookout. It smelt good and we wondered if a cafe had opened as we came down off the track.
Then we drove on to some more 'scenic' sites - a grave of a Mother and child. At that point, RM, who was navigating, decided that wheel tracks leading off into the scrub were the correct way to reach our next site. So off we lurched, me driving. The tracks petered out but in sight of a proper dirt road. Deciding this was the correct route, we continued along this track. After some time and some 'discussion' we decided to turn back. When we rejoined the main dirt track, we stopped to read the notice on the road we had just been on. It had a big Danger notice, no entry, blasting, large trucks etc, etc. It was clearly not the road to the aboriginal paintings! At this point, a large G and T beckoned me so we hot carred it back to Mt Magnet and the pub.
