Day 47. Today we walked around Point Samson and its small port. There are some offshore mining rigs in the harbour, presumably awaiting a new location. Then off to Dampier where we worshipped at the shrine of Red Dog. Elle was more interested in another live dog than the statue but we did manage to get her to pose for pictures with Red Dog. There was a steady stream of folk and their dogs being photographed with Red Dog. Dog tragics!
Dampier is a pretty town with a lovely harbour where we had lunch. The activities associated with the various mining activities around here, both land and sea need to be seen to be believed. Quite unlike anything else we have seen and demonstrates visually the two speed economy.
Then we drove back through Karratha, which seems to be a long suburb of new housing amongst mines, train lines and port facilities and thence to Roebourne, which has some fine old buildings, including the old gaol, built in the 19th century. A lovely building for some horrendous treatment of the prisoners, especially the aboriginal inmates!
Then back to lovely Point Samson and a mini roast dinner, cooked outside in the electric oven. This has been a good investment as we can have a roast without the van smelling of roast dinner.
