Day 60. We reached Leonora in time for lunch. Then we drove out to the preserved town of Gwalia and the Gwalia gold mine. I have been there before but RM had not seen it. It is a shanty town, preserved as it was for a hundred years. People lived there until a mere 40 years ago. Contrast the mine manager's house (Herbert Hoover before he became a Republican President) on the hill with the miners hutches! And what we all lived in 1963. I remember being angry when I first saw Gwalia and I still am. Double standards! The mine is back in production with a truck load of ore worth $11,000.00 at the moment. The museum is excellent and RM noted the steam winding engine was reminiscent of the engine in the woolen mill where his Dad worked.
Leonora is a pretty town although we did need to dodge some drunks mid afternoon! It is an old town with some pretty buildings.
