Day 56. 8 weeks on the road and still enjoying it. Today we are in Geraldton. Just took Elle for a run on a beach at the port. The port is huge. Apparently it is mostly used to move iron ore, not wheat as we thought, according to a local on the wharf. There are a lot of lovely private boats here as well. It is a prosperous looking town in the middle of a makeover of its street scape. What they have done is very effective and sets off the lovely old buildings which abound in every street. The coast line, beaches and port are additional bonuses. Above Geraldton is a beautifully executed monument to HMAS Sydney and its company, all 644 lost in WW2 in a sea battle with a German raider. Most poignant is a sculpture of a woman looking out to sea, in the direction of where the ship sank - the eternal Mother, waiting for her son to return. A final touch is a pool of remembrance built when the ship's resting place was finally found.
Then we drove back to Northampton through the lovely Chapman Valley, which is as green as dairy country back in the east.
