Tuesday was my first 'normal' day as an au aupair - the family were all up and gone before I got up, feeling horrible after being sick during the night, I managed to catch Caroline's bug :(, and literally feeling homesick - it's amazing how being sick can instantly make me feel like a little girl and want my Mummy! Felt much better after a phone call to home and slept on the couch for most of the morning and watched The Aristocats, the perfect medicine!
I felt much better in the afternoon, so decided to do some exploring. I set off walking in the opposite direction to Louis' school, and somehow managed to make my way there anyway! Was very tempting walking past all of the decadent cakes and chocolates in the windows of the boulangeries, it was good I had no appetite or I think I would have made myself sick again by eating too many! I will have to work my way around all of the different cakes, it's lucky I have six months here because there are a lot! The weather was spectacular today, hot and sunny - exactly what I had been hoping for! I found a nice park to sit in and enjoy the sun while practising some sentences to use on Louis and Aurore when I picked them up from school (Louis just looked at me as if to say 'That kind of sounded like French, but I have no idea what you said') but Aurore understood!
Cooking tea was interesting - they consume insane amounts of salt (especially compared to my habit of never ever adding salt to anything!) and the food they eat is quite disjointed, instead of one main dish that we might have (i.e. pasta with veggies and a sauce) they have some pasta with just a plain tomato sauce, some eggs and some ham (and soup of course!) but it is actually an easy way to cook I guess.
Bedtime actually went well tonight! I had them in bed by eight, and they were both so tired that they happily went to sleep and even forgot that they hadn't said goodnight to their parents!
I then watched a movie with Caroline and Mathias, luckily they always watch movies in English with French subtitles! Mathias and I talked about France compared to Australia, he is not a big fan of France (I think mostly because of immigrants) and has a rather rosy picture of Australia, so I spend a lot of time actually talking Australia down (his complaining about the retirement age in France being raised was quickly shot down!) to try and give him a more realistic idea. But I do enjoy hearing the way that people from other countries perceive the world, even if I do strongly disagree with some of it.
