I am very busy at the moment because of the teaching going on every day from 9 am to 5 pm and when I get back to the Bhutan Suites at 5.10 I always need to prepare for the next day. Even though I planned and prepared everything in Denmark before coming here there are correction and changes to be made when you get to know the participants. For example: we learnt about giving feedback to each other yesterday and today the trainers gave some Power Point Presentations which they were to get some feedback on. My intention was to give this feedback in class since we are only 12 participants. But yesterday when I came home I reflected about this - people here in Bhutan are always very polite and positive towards each other and I realized that my participants would probably have a very difficult time saying anything even slightly negative to each other. So I changed the approach so that only positive feedback was given in the class and afterwards they gave each other "advice for improvements" in small groups of 4. And THAT worked well :-)
I think I am very lucky with the group of trainers I am teaching - they are very good teachers and all eager to learn new things and to improve! Isn't that wonderful?
I must also admit that I am being completely spoiled here! Every morning Miss Kinley (a participant from the Ministry) is picking me up at the Bhutan Suites and taking me to the conference place. And every day when we finish another participant from the Ministry, Mr. Karma, is driving me home. As soon as we get to the Bhutan Suites he will take my suitcase (with computers, loudspeakers and a video camera) and carry it all the way to the lift!
When we had the first tea break on the first day of the course I noticed people hanging around instead of going outside the room to get the tea. Oh well, I didn't think about it so much - just went out to get mine. And shortly after everybody came out and took their tea. At lunch I was doing something on the computer so I didn't go out of the room right away - nobody left the room - and suddenly a thought occurred to me: Are they waiting for me???? I had to ask: "Please are you waiting for me to go out for lunch?" "Of course, Ma'm," was the answer! So now I have learnt that I am the first one to leave the room otherwise we'll starve to death ;-)
Every time I have something to carry one of the participants will run up to me and carry it for me.
Every time I am going to open a door one of the participants will open it for me.
Every time I have had tea or food one of the participants will remove my cup and plate before I even think of it myself.
Every time I need some equipment it will be running as soon as I turn the other way.
You have no idea how difficult it has been for somebody like me - living by myself and used to doing everything myself to get used to this service. But I am learning fast - so watch out - I will be completely spoiled and expect a lot of service from men when I come back!! ;-)
