Last night's Albergue was the best so far--owners were so nice, quiet room, great sleep, the best cafe con leche so far (so I had 2), and a hot croissant this morning. 26 km, 16 miles today. The medieval pilgrims didn't believe in walking in the valleys--they had to go up and over everything! So, it was another up and down kind of day with a big "up" to get to our mountain top finish at Villamayor de Monjardin. The highlight of today had to be the Fuente de Vino--Fountain of Wine--meant to give the pilgrims strength and vitality on their way to Santiago. Of course...it's Spain! It's actually a continuation of a tradition of the Benedictine monks at the nearby monastery of caring for pilgrims. The custom is to drink the wine from your scallop shell that you are carrying on your pack--the scallop is representative of St. James. Clare got a big kick out of this fountain, and it made her knee feel better for the rest of the day.
