First a story about last night: we had just finished our showers after arriving in the town of Villamayor and checking in to the albergue. A French man named Javier came to us and said that there was no food in the village. No grocery and the owner of the only bar/restaurant in town was sick and it was closed. While John and I immediately went to Tripadvisor because there HAD to be some restaurant around, Javier, who has been walking from Le Puy, France for 49 days, was organizing the cooking of a meal in the albergue kitchen. When we didn't find any restaurant, we got in on the communal meal. The brother (Carmelo) of the albergue owner brought over fresh eggs and tomatoes from his garden and pasta/red sauce and, of course, wine, from his house. John fixed amazing omelettes with ham, cheese, and tomatoes with the French guy looking over his shoulder (we told him that John's nickname is The Egg Man), and Javier made pasta with 2 Italian guests watching him. The Italians, Ana and Massimo are lovely, and we walked with them off and on today. We are all staying tonight at the Albergue Izar, and they cooked us a fantastic dinner of curry chicken, potatoes, tomato and cucumber salad, bread, and wine. Today was a tough stage--30.5 km, 19 miles, Clare's phone said 49,160 steps! Again up and down, but somehow the flat, road parts are the worst for me--a lot of pounding--my feet are sore. We went through beautiful villages and countryside with lots of vineyards and olive trees. Our lunch place had a cold pool for your feet! We also saw a flock of sheep stopped to eat grapes, and John was thrilled to see the first pilgrims with a donkey!
