We arrived in Madrid this morning. I actually slept some on the plane, and this has been the best transatlantic transition so far. Clare's host parents (from her Soria, Spain experience this summer) met us at the bus station in Soria, took us out to lunch, then a long walk through beautiful parks, crazy old parts of town and down by the river to an old hermitage. Clare had spoken so much about how great their serrano ham is--so we went with them to the Supermercado to get a new ham and went back to Sergio, Montse, and Sofia's apartment, where John got a lesson in ham carving. The dinner was delicious with ham, cheese, Sergio's mom's homemade chorizo, Montse's famous potato and egg tortilla, local red wine, and toad skin melon--kindof a cross between a honeydew and a cantelope. Sergio's toast to our Camino was warm and heartfelt--it felt like home.
