Leaving St Jean Pied de Port as the sun was coming up, it was beautiful but already windy at that lower elevation--a sign of things to come. Basically most of today's walk was an intense climb (total 4800 ft elevation gain) with sections of flatter at the mountain passes and then a steep 3 mile descent. The sun was replaced at the top with some rain and gale force winds--thank goodness for Goretex! But the views were spectacular and the Fall leaves were amazing. We are staying tonight in a newly renovated Albergue in Roncevalles that has been serving pilgrims since the 12th century. Before dinner we went to the Pilgrim Mass and Blessing at the church. The priest said the blessing in about 8 different languages for all the different pilgrim nationalities.
