First a note about last night--we didn't get chanting because all but one of the monks were out of town, but we did have a very special pilgrim mass and blessing with many "new" and "old" camino friends present, including a French family with 6 kids, ages 5 months to 10 years, who has walked from their home in Toulouse for 76 days on their way to Santiago. They were also staying in our albergue, and the kids were amazingly good! Our Colombian priest friend, Freddy, concelebrated.
Today was a big day 26km/16 mile--big climb up and then down. We climbed up to 5000 ft (highest point on the Camino) to the Cruz de Ferro, a landmark on the Way where people bring rocks (usually from home) and leave them at the cross, symbolizing the letting go of burdens or something else. Some also place a stone in memory or honor of someone. It was a a serious and somber scene, as pilgrims walked up on the pile of rocks at the cross and dropped their stones. It was a chilly, windy day but dry, and no snow. The mountains today reminded us of ours back home--green and beautiful. The up parts were fine, but some of the down parts were fairly steep. We made our way down to an old mill village where we are staying tonight.
