Leaving Soria was hard--we felt like Clare's host family was now ours. They graciously offered to take us in their car the 2 hours to Pamplona. From there we took a bus 2 more hours across the Pyrenees and into France. The town of St Jean Pied de Port is a lovely little mountain town--medieval ramparts and gates, cobblestone streets, a very helpful Pilgrim Office, where we got the forecast of "windy" for the next day from Mark, a volunteer from Austrailia. We stayed at Beileri (means Pilgrim in Basque), which was such a sweet hostel. The owners, Josef and Jacylyn, served a delicious dinner, consisting of salad and tartes made with spinach, pumpkin and cheese, and 3 desserts--chocolate stout cake, a traditional Basque cake, and a lemon panna cotta. Before the meal Josef introduced a game where everyone told their name then where they are from and how they were feeling about starting the Camino. It was their last night open for the season, and some family members from Pamplona were there as well as pilgrims from Canada, Colombia, and Louisiana. It was amazing as the conversation went seemlessly between English and Spanish and French and Basque! Nervously awaiting the start of our Camino and the most difficult day!
