It's China!!!! seems to be a rather well used phrase here. I was informed that after Golden week (national holdiay) I would have to return to work on the 8th of October, so when booking my flights to Hong Kong, I had these dates in mind, sensible? I was told today that I actually do not have to return to work until the 10th (a saturday?) but meant I could have had 2 more days in Hong Kong, and also could have been there for Suzy's birthday none the less there is nothing I can do about it now, since the price of the flights have now more than doubled. This is typical China tho, all the information required is left until the last minute. The fact that they have told us now, and not after I have already arrived back is a near miracle.
Due to the holidays tho classes have been changed about, in good old fashioned Chinese style - the hardest way possible. I'l try give you a brief overview of how my following weeks are going to pan out.
I'm now working on Sunday, and will be teaching my Thursday lessons, seems simple enough, poor kids tho, having to go to school at the weekend, like they aint here enough - being a boarding school and all. On Wednesday tho, my last working day I will be teaching my Friday classes - they like to end the week on a Friday, because its Fridays lessons don't think that makes it a Friday, hey It's China!!! Then the following week I'm working the Saturday and will be teaching the Wednesdays lessons, hope ur following all this, because i'm not. Just to complicate things even more, we work alternative weeks with different classes so no idea what age group i'l be teaching or when. Go with the flow, It's China!!! If i miss classes, or plan stuff that they have already done, or of the complete wrong level, I won't be surprised.
Apart from this entire confusion, today went rather swimmingly, still have my voice, some other Chinese English teachers sat in on my lesson, cause they heard it was good (not that i'm bragging or anything ) and bought a giant cake for Fiona's birthday 2mo out of "better life" which is the closest supermarket to our flat, which i seem to be in an awful lot.
Til next time
Karen
