Round the world in 150 days
Where was I? Burgos. Oooh, painful leg, a bit of shopping for warm clothes, dinner with Pop pop and Micah, a bit of an easter procession with KKK hats, drums, trumpets and and people singing. Next day, couldn't find a hostel because it was easter thursday and a public holiday here. So my increasingly sore leg and i said bye to pop pop and micah and hobbled to the albergue. It smelled funny and there were a million people there.
The next day i met a German called Ralph with a funny little red hat who was also crippled like me. Back later....'
I've been a bit tired lately so the journal has been a bit neglected. Where was I... I met a German called... I think Shuren. I'm not sure. I had to get him to repeat it a few times and even then i still didn't get it. He said he hadn't had any sleep of late due to all the people who 'snork'. Pretty funny.
Walking that day and an excruciating pain was running through my shin and seizing my leg up so i had to stop, find myself a stick, re-bandage the shin so it had pressure on it, find myself another stick and then everything seemed to be ok. Ralph turns up and said no-one wanted to walk with him because he was a cripple too and was too slow for everyone. So we continue on, me with my two walking sticks like an old lady. Everyone looks on with sympathy as you pass through their towns.
The town i stayed in had bells in the church tower but unlike every other town in spain, these bells don't actually work; there is a speaker in the bell tower. It is quite ridiculous.
Two Madrileño doctors turn up and the next day, the physiotherapist looks at my foot and tells me what i need to do. Looks like this was my lucky day.
In the last part of the day, i decide that the quickest way to make my leg recover is to go as slow as i need to go without feeling pain and with full movement of my foot. So i measure the length of my step and count how many steps i take in 15 minutes and it turns out i'm doing 2kms/hour. The afternoon is quite long, but not so bad. I think it's a bit of a lesson to me to slow the hell down!!
A 19km day that should have taken 5 hours takes 8.
At lunch time i stop to eat some biscuits and a sandwich and a lady decides to squat right in front of me. That's nice of her while i'm eating my lunch.
At Hontanas, some little 11 year old girls are playing a spanish card game. The cards are unique to spain and i think i might learn how to play because everyone seems to do it around here. Anyway, the little girls finish their game and leave the cards on the table. A breeze comes along and blows them away. I am about to get them when Ralph says (with his german lisp) 'no, leave them, they'll come in a minute and run around and pick them all up'. Sure enough, about 10 minutes and a few gusts of wind later and they run around and pick up all the cards and put them back on the table.
Snoring French people in my room.
