Round the world in 150 days
Todays journal entry is entitled 'No-one said it was going to be easy'. It finally kicked in today that i'm walking 780kms and that i have walked 1/10th of the way. Haha. This made me laugh.
Last night, i met a Zubirian working in his garden. He spoke only espagnol but i managed to have a good 15 minute conversation with him. Very funny. I found out why the horses have bells (probably obvious to most, but not to surbanite me): 'Porche Los caballos tienan Las campagna?' Then i got a barrage of spanish from the 12 year old girl who i asked who had no concept of the fact that i was just learning spanish. Then her friends said 'So they can be found when they run away to the hills'. Hmm. Interesting concept.
Today. 10am A baguette, cheese, herbed olives and figs beside a beautiful river. All i need is a glass of red wine. I think i'll get a watertight carafe to carry 600ml of vino. It's good to take the edge off sore body and would have been perfect for such and occasion as the river morning tea.
Some spanish lads started talking to me like i understood what they were saying (everyone seems to be doing that... Do i look spanish or something¿). Then one of them pointed in the direction that i had just come from and told me that santiago was that way. I laughed, swished my hand at him and kept going.
Huerte. A town before Pamplona. I see an internet cafe and walk in. I sit down at terminal 2. The owner is quite handsy with me, but he's old and i think he's just being friendly so i ignore it. He says 'es bonita'... you're pretty. Then he says 'te quiero', which i understand to mean 'i love/want you'. Hmm right. I feign ignorance. Then he says it again in another way. 'te amo'. I laugh at the old man. Later, he comes in and kisses me on the cheek. Ãfter a few questions about my marital status etc, he says 'tranquil aqui'. Which i take to mean 'is everything cool?'. Do i understand him? he wants to know. Si, everythings cool. Then the old man walks to the door, closes the big glass door and then the massive iron security gate that protects his shop from intruders. I go to the door and knock on it. Then he walks off with his little shopping trolley thing. I'm locked in the old mans shop, thinking that he's going to turn me into his gimp. I start giggling because this is a ridiculous situation. Then i get my pack and walk to the door to wait til he gets back, meanwhile laughing maniacally at the predicament i have got myself into. He comes back and looks in the window to see that i'm still there. I say 'i've gotta go'. He opens the door and tries to railroad me back into his shop with his trolley. I barge out and hand him 1€ for the internet and say 'adios'. He looks at me strangely. Then i walk off and look back about 100m down the road and he's still standing there watching me. Well i nearly became someones gimp. I've decided not to go out in the bigger towns by myself. The country side is ok, but the towns are full of strange people, who prey on those who don't understand what they are saying. Seems that i am a weirdo magnet at the moment. I promise myself to be more wary of weird european men.
I go and get a coffee and pastry and wait for the two germans to turn up on the camino. They don't speak any english, so i gesture that i want to walk with them and then spend the next hour playing charades with them. Their names are renata and herman. Nice people.
Anyway, my knees are absolutely stuffed and by body is screaming at me. And we're only 3 days in!!! It should get better though, once my body gets conditioned to walking a million miles a day. I found a bath so i think i'll go buy some disinfectant and bathe my sore body.
It's only 4pm. The day is still young!! Who knows what could happen after this entry has been added. Just wait for the next exciting installment....
