Great supper last night with Anne and Brian who very kindly took us away from the side of the motorway to a pretty country pub. Great to see them. Anne very very kindly agreed to take our panniers to our next stop so we had an easier day today. thanks Anne!!!
After being warned of the dangers of cycling in Warrington and also of various fatalities, and of the dearth of cyclists arriving at John O'Groats when compared to those leaving, we changed our route on sat nav for the first part of the day. We cycled across tracks in fields, through farmyards, 5 bar gates...
Having successfully navigated around Warrington we hit Leigh. Didn't fancy stopping here but shortly after passing the high security prison we discovered country lanes and felt more at home. This was short-lived as we soon reached Bolton and then busy black Blackburn. I don't want to be too negative about Blackburn as it is home to the splendid Wainwright Bridge. Of course, named after that jolly author of many lakeland books, Alfred Wainwright.
Some places in the UK have unusual names. Today we passed Whalley, Bashall Eaves and Cow Ark and then climbed up into the Forest of Bowland to Slaidburn.
Slaidburn is a picturesque village that appears to have been lost in time. Again the evening was in sunshine, so we sat outside. The pub we were staying at had it's outside tables on the road which gave us a bird's eye view of the vintage tractors and steam engines that were assembling for the steam rally on the following day.
