Sad to leave the beautiful Lake District behind even if it did take quite a lot of effort cycling up the side of Skiddaw. Met a cyclist with one arm on the road out of Keswick. When he heard that we were taking a right turn to Orthwaite he expressed surprise on that particular route as it was exceptionally hilly and there was a flatter faster route.....nevertheless we stuck to the guidance from say nav and made it in the end.
You may be wondering about the chap with one arm- he had a false arm made from part of a prosthetic lower limb and also a large hook which he rested on the handlebars. Quite an inspiration.
We reached the border in good spirits and were lucky to come across a Scottish person who had driven to the border so as to step into England- he kindly took a photo of us by the sign.
Our route took us through Carlisle then on a very exhausting 32 miles on the NCN 74. Not to be recommended...This is part of the national cycle network so is fairly free from cars but the road surface was unforgiving and also on a fairly continuous incline. Bump, bump. bump.. Uncomfortable to say the least.
Passed Gretna Green (full of German tourists and a bagpiper), Ecclefechan (Thomas Carlyle's birthplace), Lockerbie then Moffat.
It is amazing how many discarded gloves we have come across on the roads- gardening gloves, rubber gloves, - all singly. Also individual boots... Even a brush today.
What can I say about Moffat? Friendly people, and see the photos for shops...

Karen Stiven Hi Ladies.......what's with all the gloves discarded on the road.....how odd. You could start a second hand single glove swapping site! I have been envying you this weekend as I have gone into work each day and really resented it.....never good going in when e sun is shining. Have only just got home, having a quick glass of vino, to bed and then up for usual run at 6. Have a good sleep x
