Mammoth day today. 83 miles from Glencoe to Inverness which is pretty much travelling from the east coast to west coast of Scotland. (Ok, it is the narrowest bit of Scotland...)
We set off in a fine drizzle and with ominous low set clouds above us. The road out of Glencoe was very busy with holiday traffic and also timber lorries which made for hard cycling.
After 18 miles we reached sunny Fort William, having travelled around the side of Ben Nevis. Some pics but most of it was in cloud when we passed.
Stunning trip along the Caledonian canal and Loch Lochy. A chap at the start of the canal trail warned us of potential perils; the last cyclist he had seen had had 5, yes FIVE punctures. Then, having escaped from puncture but having developed bilateral vibration white hands we travelled on to Fort Augustus for a sandwich. And to brave ourselves for the climb.
We took an amazing road out of Fort Augustus called General Wade's Military Road. Hardest climb of the trip; far worse than anything the Devon hills can throw at you-but rewarded by fabulous views of the Monadhliath mountains and Loch Ness. No sightings of Nessy though.
In Inverness tonight. Only 2 more days until we reach the other end of the country.
Thank you to everyone who has posted on this blog- great to hear from you all. Also thanks for all the sponsorship!! People have been very generous and together we have raised over £3000!
