Me and Dane went to Green Island, but because we only booked it at midnight, we didn't manage to get on to the 8.30 am ferry across, but the 10.30 am one instead. I didn't sleep very well the night before which seems like a recurring thing the night before going to islands (I seem to remember the same thing before going to Fitzroy).
When asked for my booking number at the ferry ticket counter, the number I recalled writing down on my iPhone (which I stupidly forgot to bring/ write down in another place) was according to the woman 'definitely not it' which seemed quite funny at the time (although when I checked back it seemed like it was correct). Another amusing thing was that you could get local rates if you could privde I.D. and a letter with your address on- I got local rates and Dane didn't! The joke was that I was pretending to show him around because I was the local, when he knew the island because he worked there for 7 months.
When we got there we had a bit of walk around, and got our snorkelling gear. We didn't see Cassius the biggest crocodile in captivity because you had to pay to get in. The first spot we went snorkelling in was a bit dull- it was just brown coral and grass mostly, although Dane started tapping me on the shoulder at one point. I couldn't see what he was showing me for ages, but he was making 'stay out the way' gestures. It turned out it was a huge manta ray, so I started getting really nervous, knowing that that's what Steve Irwin died from. The water was cold so we didn't stay long in.
Dane knew that the wildlife was a bit better under the jetty so we went for a swim there. It was a bit nicer to look at, although it wasn't as colourful as I remembered Fitzroy Island being. Dane saw a huge barracuda but I'm not as observant as him! I kept swallowing loads of salt water and Dane got cold so we went back on the beach, and , stupidly, fell asleep (the combination of not sleeping well and swimming being a big sleep inducer) causing us to both resemble lobsters a bit.
We saw a turtle popping its head up on the way onto the boat, but it didn't make a very good picture.
Upon our return to the mainland, we used the lagoon showers to get rid of our salt layer on our skin, and then went to buy food for our barbeque with Fernando and Ashleigh. We brought pork steaks, chicken parmesan and garlic sausages, satay chicken kebabs and soy and honey kebabs, with some onions, spinach, quinao salad, potato salad and bread. I went back to the hostel to get a knife, cutlery and plates and then joined them at a barbeque near the lagoon.
After that I went to meet hostel people at the bar in the casino building, as it was Jemima's birthday (the girl who tried to do my tax return for me), but I felt too tired to join them in going to Gilligan's.
