Alice had come back after we had gone to bed, but she had got the job at the restaurant- she's getting $10 an hour but they can give her 35- 40 hours a week. She also got given free spinach curry and chapattis, although she found it too spicy to eat (which is good news for me).
I had to hand in my notice for cleaning at the hostel, because when I have evening shifts at Hogs, they start at 6 so wouldn't be able to be here at 5.30-8.30. I'm also going to have to let Hogs know that this week I can't work Thursday and Friday evening, as I had to give 1 weeks' notice to the hostel, and Bex can't cover my shifts then as she is also working in the evening.
I came into town to pick up my Australian bank account card, and to get some denim shorts- my uniform for Hog's Breath. I was wandering around aimlessly, so decided to pop in half an hour early for my 12 shift. But when I got there, they looked on the roster which said I wasn't supposed to be there at lunch, which left me feeling very confused as I'm sure Chats had said I would be meeting Alan, the Franchisee, in the morning. It was good though as it meant I could spend more of my day with Bex. I met her off the bus, and she treated herself to some new flip-flops, a handbag and some dip-die purple/white hot pants. We picked up some stuff for her lunch of birthday fajitas, which we cooked once we got back. Alice had tofu, and we had chicken- it's so nice when you get protein again (our free dinner never includes anything, not even veggie substitutes!). We sang happy birthday to Bex when we brought out her very yummy chocolate cake. Alice's chapattis were very nice when warmed in the microwave.
Had my first proper shift at 6, and discovered I was put down for the lunch shift, but Josh had changed it without telling me or Chats (I was a bit scared this would happen, but obviously they didn't blame me). I have been given the spiel to learn to say to the customers at the beginning:
"Welcome to Hog's Breath Café"
Or
"Welcome back to Hog's Breath Café" if they have a frequent diner's card.
"My name's Laura and I'll be looking after you today/this evening, so just ask me if you need anything.
Let me tell you about our House Speciality Prime Rib steaks. They're slow cooked for up to 18 hours, and are most tender when done medium-rare. They come in three sizes lite, traditional or mega cut, so that's 200, 300 or 400 grams.
We've also got our blackboard specialities, today/tonight it's….
Can I get you any entrees to start with? Our food finger combo and garlic and herb bread to share are popular.
And can I get you any drinks whilst you look at the menu?"
I was also taught how to hold 3 plates - a bit wobbly still! I offered to take a picture of a Japanese couple together, but in actual fact they wanted a picture with me (it's like India all over again!) The girl said I was 'cute'.
We went out to celebrate Bex's birthday. First we went to P.J. O' Briens, where a man called Donald wouldn't shut up, and then got all angry about how England doesn't let Australia run itself. We ran off to Rattle 'n' Hum after we had finished our drinks he had brought us. Rattle 'n' Hum had emu's painted on the wall, which Alice admired- she wants to ask Jane if she can do it in her room when she gets back. The Woolshed were giving out free sombreros, so we had wanted to go there, but I didn't have any I.D. on me because my driver's license was in my purse when I lost it. I left to go to bed after another drink at P.J's, as it will be the first time I meet the Franchisee and manager tomorrow.
