My Camino Journey
We didn't get up super early today because we have a reservation at a hotel in Leon and being a short day of only 18km we all felt really relaxed. We had a breakfast in the Albergue and were on the road by 7.30am. It was a pretty boring path today, all along road side. There were a few nicer sections where there we crossed rivers and over nice bridge but only having to cover 18km really made the day go quickly. Today also makes the last day Silas will be walking with us, he is finishing in Leon and returning back to Denmark. We have pretty much walked together since the 16th when we're were in Hornillos del Camino and nearly homeless together..... We have really had some fun together, he is so easy to get along with and I often forget that English is his second language and find it very entertaining when I have to explain some of the Aussie slang during conversation we have with Sonia and Phil... Only a couple of days ago Silas said that there are times when Sonia, Phil and myself are talking and Silas has absolutely no idea what we are saying.... We jump from one line of conversation to the next and he can't keep up hehe... We arrived in Leon about 12 noon and were just totally blown away by the place, it was amazing. The streets were beautiful, with loads of cafes and restaurants lining them. We went to the main square and were speechless, it was so beautiful. I also bumped into Maryanne from Denmark who I had not seen since back in Burgos. She has arrived into Leon yesterday and was having today as a rest day, she hadn't seen Bert in a while, I must email him and see where he is. Leaving the main square we decided to find a place to eat, which was very easy cause there was loads of amazing looking place. We sat at a nice restaurant which had paella on the menu, I order the seafood and it was Devine. We found out hotel and checked in at 2pm, it was right in the centre of town and was the perfect location, close to bars and restaurants, we even had a nice little bar down stairs which offered tapas. Leon was fantastic. Dinner time we met up with Becky and David, it was their 32nd wedding anniversary and wanted to celebrate with us all by buying a couple of bottles of champagne. We found this nice place and all sat outside and toasted to their 32 years and wished them many mow happy years to come. After we had finished 4 bottles of champagne we thought we better get some food, so we moved on to another tapas bar, we're all 12 of us sat at a table and had racciones, which is bigger versions of tapas, they were so delicious. I was feeling so grateful to be apart of such a lovely occasion with a great bunch of people from all over the world who have just randomly come together and formed amazing friendships. After dinner we wandered around the busy streets watching busker play music, gypsies dancing and just loads of locals out for a lovely Friday night full of celebrations. We saw a few hens and bucks night and enjoyed just people watching whilst we walked off some of our huge dinner. We got back to our hotel and the bar below it was absolutely packed, we decided to have a round of baileys, and enjoy the atmosphere. We were still astounded how cheap drink were for us here, a round of 6 baileys on ice and 1 bourbon & coke was just 21€ and when they serve it they bring the whole bottle out with the glasses and just fill up the glasses, there is no measuring anything.... It was really cool. Shortly after that we all started to feel tired, it was almost midnight and we still had to get up tomorrow and walk 21.8km. So off to bed we went, the only problem being that the party down stairs in the bar continued until around 4.30am, so needless to say we didn't get a lot of sleep in our fantastic hotel rooms.....
