After trying out the showers down the corridor (surprisngly better than I expected, despite the shower head being about arse-height, making for some extremely weird shower-crouching motion), we headed into Downtown LA, just for a wander round. The buildings in Downtown are massive, in fact, everything in America is massive. The buildings, the cars, the people... (that last one doesn't actually apply to most Los Angeles residents)
Found a bar called Dublins, which very much resembled that of Cheers, so much so I was waiting for Norm to walk in at any moment. Unfortunately, the best we got was some horrendously drunk Irish pisshead in a Celtic shirt chanting various Manchester United songs claiming he was the drummer for the Dropkick Murphys. A word of advice; DON'T jokingly tell a pissed Celtic fan that you prefer Rangers... They don't get sarcasm.
Later in the day we ventured to the nearest MetroLine subway station which was apparently 15 minutes away according to google maps, but when you forget to take a map with you, this can take an hour.
The tube is $1.50 fare. Flat rate. Will take you anywhere you want to go. No one actually checks them, but it's better than the possibility of being caught without one and given a $250 fine and 48 hrs community service. I'd rather pay the quid...
We'd decided to go all the way to Hollywood/Highland and walk back down Hollywood Boulevard. As soon as you leave the station and turn right, you walk into the plaza that takes you up to the best viewpoint of the Hollywood sign.
Just next door is Mann's Chinese theater, where all the out of work actor's pose as celebrities or superheroes to earn a few bob. There were some quite good ones like Jules and Vince from Pulp Fiction, a couple of Michaels Jackson's in different stages, Batman and The Joker, and a Spider-Man, but some were just lazy. I'll no doubt go there again and spend some more time looking at them.
We decided to stop off for a quick beer on the way back. Despite the sign outside saying "All Beer $3 Happy Hour All Day", you'd assume that this meant all the beer would be $3 per glass throughout the day. The second beer went up to $4... They don't like not being tipped here.
On our journey back, walking past all the tattoo parlours, Hollywood stars of lesser known celebrities, and hookers, and struggling to find the Metro, we walked up the wrong side road. This was beneficial, as we walked past our first celebrity. And a good one it was too. Jennifer Love Hewitt! I think she was getting drunk. Unfortunately, we'd walked the wrong way, so had to walk past her again, confirming that it was in fact her. And yes, they are fantastic in real life...
Another early night. I think I'm still jet-lagged.
