I just realized how far behind I am in my blog! The time goes by so fast here that sometimes I don't even know what day it is. So I guess I'll just give the Reader's Digest version of my week:
Sunday was a really great day. Christa and I went to Jakob's again to get a sandwich and mocha. I love that place. These Armenian guys run it and they're so friendly and nice. The last time we went Christa ordered and then the guy asked me what I wanted and I said I was with Christa. Then he said "congratulations" and started laughing and said he was just joking. So when we went in on Sunday he said "Lovers! How are you?" He's so nice.
The Concert for Diana was AMAZING!! It rained the whole morning and we were afraid it would do that for the concert, but the sun came out and it was perfect the whole time. We had great seats too.
Classes started on Monday and I switched out of my class that same day. I was taking Modern Britain: A Social Analysis, but the teacher was so demanding and had so many papers and projects and I just don't want to do that much work when I've only got 3 weeks left in London so I changed to Intro to Modern Europe 1870-1945. I actually like this class, but I can't really figure the teacher out. I don't know if he just assumes that all Americans are arrogant and think they're the best, but he treats us like everything we've learned has been manipulated because of the fact that we are American and how we always expect people to speak English when we go to another country and stuff like that. Basically he sees the glass as half empty.
Tuesday we went to Tate Modern, which is an art gallery on the river with all modern art. They had Picasso, Dali, Monet, and Frida Kahlo. Some of the art was interesting to look at and some of it didn't even look like art. Wednesday morning Christa and I went to the Tower of London, which was pretty amazing. I think we were there for almost 3 hours and we still didn't see everything. The Crown Jewels were okay, but I'm not really that into diamonds so it wasn't a big deal to me. We got to see some of the torture instruments and the armory with all of the weapons and armor of former kings. Wednesday night we had a 4th of July karaoke party in the basement of a pub near Leicester Square. It was so much fun! These 3 guys kept coming up and singing Backstreet Boys and Boyz II Men. Let me just say that tone deaf and drunk is a funny combination. Even Ged (our resident director) got up and sang 500 Miles!
Thursday morning Christa and I went to Harrods because they're having a huge sale this whole week. We ended up buying a huge chocolate chip cookie from the chocolate section and that was all. I also wanted to take a picture of the Dodi and Diana memorial, but there was someone filming around it and other people in front of it so I just looked at it again. There was this cute British guy who works there standing by it and Christa said he was looking at me as I was going up the escalator and I thought about how ladies used to drop their handkerchiefs and the guy would pick it up. That's pretty much stupid now, but I thought it would have been funny to bean him in the back of the head with a coin and say I was trying to get it into the fountain of the memorial! I cracked myself up just thinking of that one. And actually I just thought of something else that's pretty funny. I keep tripping and falling everywhere here and I forget if I put it in here or not, but one time I fell down the front steps of Atlantic House. I literally skidded down the steps on my butt. Another time I was walking on the main floor and just fell down! I didn't trip or anything, just went straight down. And it's always a guarantee that if it's raining outside I will slip on the sidewalk several times. Then today I was walking in to breakfast and slid to the right...it kind of looked like a dance move except I flew right into the wall and caught myself on the corner. Good stuff.
This evening I went to Stomp at the Vaudeville Theatre. I remember watching it on TV a while ago, but it's so much better live. It went for 2 hours, but it seemed like just a couple of minutes. Definitely my favorite show I've seen so far. The people in it were hilarious too with their non-verbals and timing. I loved it.
I'm off to Paris for the weekend! I'll have my computer with me so I'll try and update, but I don't know how much I'll be in the room other than to sleep. But I will definitely take a ton of pictures!
