Our stay at Kalpic was truly idyllic. our hosts, Emilia, Evo and Ivana were so warm and welcoming . Their small farm is set in the heart of the countryside amidst now derelict stone houses which are hundreds of years old. We were fortunate to have "Peka" a traditional Croatian dish cooked slowly in a large dish under a ceramic bell and covered with embers. it is similar to a bush oven, I've been told. The meat and vegetables are all cooked together with spices, olive oil and white wine and of course it melts in your mouth.
We woke in the morning to the sound of bells tinkling, this time, around the necks of the sheep and goats as they were led past our window, to their fields to graze for the day. Cuckoos were also constantly singing in the background. Each morning was spent exploring the country lanes and greeting farmers as they began their day's work.
Yesterday, we drove to Krka National Park which is famous for its flora, fauna and waterfalls. We walked a 2.5 km track through part of the park, following the waterfalls which was awe inspiring.
On our way back to Kalpic, we stopped at a raptor centre. Injured birds of prey, including owls, falcons and hawks, are taken to the centre from all over Croatia. The founder of the centre, Emilio, cares for the birds, approximately 150-200 a year, with the help of pro bono vets and volunteers. Those who survive are set free again. Some birds arrive there that have been caught and mistreated by man and are unable to be released, similar to Galena's cockatoo.
However, Emilio is very passionate and skilled with birds of prey and these birds live at the centre.
We have some interesting photos which I will try and post tomorrow from an Internet cafe as I cannot upload from my iPhone or iPad.
The car was returned without further incident and we caught the bus to Trogir. . More tomorrow.
