Isn't Notre Dame a gorgeous church? Yesterday, during our stroll across the Pont de Sully Bridge, we photograped this view of the back of the Gothic church. It is the best known angle, and is well-recognized because of its flying buttresses. We learned last year in Florence, that the best architects built their domes without the need for butresses, as can be seen in Florence's Duomo. But, Notre Dame was built during the 170 year period from 1163 to 1333, before the more modern architectural methods were invented.
Whenever we see Notre Dame, we think of two things:
1. The 1939 movie, "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" which is based on an 1831 novel by the French author Victor Hugo (Of Les Miserables fame). In the movie Charles Laughton played Quasimodo the church's bell-ringer, and Maureen O'Hara played Esmaralda.
2. Joe Dimaggio, who commented that, in all the world, the Notre Dame Cathedral is one of the 2 best views from behind. Of course, the other was his wife at the time, Marylin Monroe.
Adieu,
