Yesterday, we went on a walking tour of the Marais District. It's not far from our apartment, but we took The Metro (subway) to meet our guide, Jill, at St. Paul's Church. She is a vounteer with Paris Greeters, a group that provides free walking tours of Paris' various districts. The Marais, which is part of the 3rd Arrondissement (the city is divided into 20 districts called "arrondissements"), is the hottest area right now because of it's unique shops, restaurants, and night life. We live next door in the Bastille District, which is partly in the 4th and partly in the 11th Arrondissements.
The Marais contains the Jewish Quarter, where Paris' Jews have resided for centuries, except during periods of persecution such as the time around World War II. Now, the Marais has a vibrant Jewish community, a significant Chinese population, and it also has a large gay community. Also in The Marais is Place des Vosges which is a large perfectly square park, suurrounded on all 4 sides by very expensive apartments and shops. Photos of Place des Vosges and the Jewish neighborhood are in our photo album. Just click on "Photos" at the top of this page.
After our tour with Jill, we stayed in the area and enjoyed a fabulous dinner at Equinox: Renee had chicken wrapped in philo dough with a marvelous sweet red pepper sauce and Steve had a lamb shank with a thyme sauce.
Adieu,
R&S
