1 word summary of the day: lost :-(
I had decided to do a somewhat longer day today of 19 miles because it was mostly on jeep roads and somewhat flat, and also because once again there was scarce water and Veda and I wanted to make it to the next water source.
Started at our usual time of 6:30am and the first couple of hours were actually quite pleasant winding through some young forests. Then we hit the jeep roads - hot, sunny, and visually not that interesting unfortunately. Still, made good time in the morning and had finished 12 miles when we decided to stop for lunch around 11:30. As we were stopping we ran into Magnolia (and her puppy Fiona) who was just starting out after night hiking with Alex and Marshall until around 3-4am. We just missed the guys who left a couple of minutes earlier, but Magnolia hung out with us and we hiked together after lunch.
Passed a couple of herds of cows (which was entertaining for Fiona) and unfortunately got distracted by the cows and missed a turn on the trail and ended up going 1.5 miles in the wrong direction before we figured it out and retraced our steps. Blame it on the cows - they were blocking the right path!
So finally made it to camp around 4:30pm, a long day. Especially since I was carrying a full seven days of heavy food in my pack :-(. But luckily it didn't start raining until we just arrived at camp, so time to set up the tent before that hit. And then it cleared again shortly after so we could all eat dinner. Everyone is turning in early tonight since we're pooped; even the dog!
