Day 1
Starting location: Waterton Canyon
Ending location: about a mile above South Platte Canyon
Distance: 18 miles
Elevation gained: 2700 ft
1 word summary of the day: HOT
I'm sitting on my thermarest at 6pm typing into my iPhone, how cool is that! Of course I can't post anything online right now as I have no cell coverage but my goal is to write a quick note everyday and upload when I have a signal. Short notes though as this keyboard is tiny!
A good first day today, though it was stinking hot :-(. I thought that it was hot at 7 when I hit the trail, and then the temp just kept rising. I didn't bring a thermometer with me, but a woman that I met at South Platte Canyon ( while dipping my feet in the water ) nicely told me that it got up to 98f! No wonder I drank 5 liters of water!
Tomorrow is likely to be hot as well as I head through a burn area (about 11 years ago I think) but them it should cool off after that as I head higher into the mountains.
Views today mostly through forests and canyons - cant wait for those mountains!
Addendum: went to bed just after 8, and a huge wind storm started around 8:30 which threatened to blow my tent down! Bad site selection on my part - i should have realized that the nice breezy ridge that I wanted mid-afternoon to cool me down would pick up at night:-(. So there I was at 8:30 frantically stuffing stuff in my pack so that I could hike a little further down the trail and find a new location before it got too dark. By 9:30 I was all set up somewhere new (albeit I found a nice rock under my sleeping pad in the am - that's what you get for setting up in the dark!)
