1 word summary of the day: passes
Well today I wanted to take it a little easier after my record breaking 19 miles yesterday. I got up around 6:15 (as the sun was just hitting near my tent) and was on the trail by 7:30am.
Today was great mountain scenery and I went over two 12000 ft passes (Searle and Kokomo) and yes then I was stuck singing the Kokomo song in my head for the rest of the afternoon! I leapfrogged with two other groups of hikers that I had met the previous day - Alex and Marshall who are from Colorado (Leadville in fact, where they will stop off tomorrow to resupply) and four really young guys (like 18ish) from Denver.
I passed through Camp Hale, which apparently used to be a military training site to train elite forces in mountain survival and warfare, and saw the old bunkers there. I was planning on camping there for the night but there wasn't a lot of shade and it is once again sunny and hot so I filled up water at the creek and hiked another 2 miles and am now camped in the forest (with the mosquitoes). At least I've temporarily lost the deerflies! Good thing my tent has bug netting as I'm sitting in it right now eating dinner. Noodles again!
