1 word summary of the day: Apple
Shorter day today since I was planning on heading into Gunnison for resupply. Initially I was hoping to sleep in a little, but with 8 people camping at the same location who are all early risers, that didn't happen. Actually sleep last night didn't really happen at all because there were lots of critters at this camp location. There was a marmot (or something of similar size) that kept trying to chew the handles of my hiking poles - I guess to get at the salt from my sweat? And since my hiking poles hold up my tent, they kind of had to stay in that location :-). And then there was a mice who was running over my tent, I between the mesh and the fly- very disturbing! But at least he was outside my tent; George from Tennessee apparently didn't have his tent zipped up tight and a mouse got inside and I heard him beating at his tent in the middle of the night trying to get rid if it (final score - George 1 mouse 0). So needless to say I'm excited to be sleeping in a bed tonight and will hopefully be ably to catch up on my sleep, mouse free, at the hostel.
So after the drama with the nighttime critters. It was an 11.5 mile hike to the trailhead where I was to meet the famous trail angel Apple. Apple trail angels for the Colorado Trail in July/August, and does the same for the Appalachian Trail earlier in the winter/spring. He's famous in long distance hiker circles!
The hike was basically on a rocky path up and down through forests. Repeat for 11.5 miles. Not that stimulating, but great to meet Apple at the end and I enjoyed the snacks that he had for thru-hikers: a can if orange crush, a can of raspberry ice tea, some sun chips, some Doritos, and a handful oh chocolate/vanilla cookies- lunch of champions! Then Apple gave Veda and I a ride into Gunnison - where the usual shower, laundry, and dinner happened. Tomorrow I'll resupply food and fuel for the next 7 day segment, and relax a little before hitting the trail again. But now - sleep!
